It has gotten much harder these days to get your web site ranked high with the various search engines and directories. Gone are the days when you simply submitted your site to the engines and wal'ah, your ranked in the top ten.

I could go on and on about the challenges we face today in trying to work with the thousands of different search engines and directories. There are whole companies that do nothing but deal with these entities.

Yahoo Yahoo Continues to dominate the search space (5-to-1) by providing a categorized directory structure. And yet EVEN Yahoo only recognizes about 16% of the web. (SUBMIT!)

Look Smart LookSmart uses Webrarians to organize and prioritize content into more than 100,000 categories, using a directory structure. (SUBMIT!)
Direct Hit Direct Hit analyzes the activities of millions of searchers to determine the most relevant sites. (SUBMIT!)
Google Google started as a Stanford project to find relevant pages based on the number of inbound links. (SUBMIT!)
Yep Yep is a newcomer produced by WebSideStory. Yep promises unique search results based on quality (tracking surfing habits) and popularity (average number of page views). (SUBMIT!)
AltaVista Probably the second most popular search engine. AltaVista focuses more on quantity than quality. (SUBMIT!)
NorthernLight Recently rated "Editors Choice" by PC Magazine in the category of Research, it consistently outperformed many of the other search engines on very specific queries. (SUBMIT!)
Fast Search Formerly called All The Web, FAST Search aims to index the entire web. It was the first search engine to break the 200 million web page index milestone. Its one of the fastest engines out there.(SUBMIT!)
