Statistics
reveal several interesting things about internet traffic. For starters
the statistics indicate that traffic to most web sites originates
from search engines. This implies that a significant number of your
visitors are typically going to look for you via one of the top
10 search engines.
Statistics
also indicate that the number one ranked site will generate 5 times
more traffic than the number 5 ranked site for a given keyword.
If your site is listed beyond the first 20, then the chances of
getting many hits to your site are slim.
Every search
engine and directory ranks your site using different criteria. Most
of them will not tell us what the criteria is that ranks one site
above another. Many engines will black ball your site if they think
you are attempting to spam or spoof. This could be as simple as
including your keywords too many times. Unfortunately many sites
abused the system in the past, so we are all paying the price.
Just as soon
as you think you have a search engine figured out, they up and change
all the rules on us. Needless to say, search engine marketing has
become a full time business for many companies. At Byte Size Concepts
we have already done most of the research, and know how to help
you get the rankings you need..
So how do you
get ranked high with the search engines? Actually there are many
things that you can do.
- Meta
Tags - One of the most obvious and easiest to do, is to include
good META tags within all your pages. These are special pieces
of information designed to help the search engines identify the
type of information contained on particular page of your site.
These tags include keywords, a description of the page, information
for the robots or spiders, etc.
- Title
- Most search engines will look at and evaluate the title given
to each of your pages. It is often recommended that your title
include one or more of your keywords.
- Doorway
Pages - These are special pages designed specifically to target
a particular search engine and a particular keyword. These pages
attempt to provide just the right mix of keywords and content
such that a given search engine will rank this page higher than
a competing page.
- Statistical
Reports
- It is important to constantly monitor your rankings with the
search engines and constantly adjust the design and verbiage of
your pages to maintain or improve your rankings. We can offer
several reporting tools to help you monitor and analyze your pages.
- Submittal
Services
- We can offer a submittal service to automate the submission
of your pages to hundreds or even thousands of the existing search
engines and directories. This can be important as some search
engines will periodically drop your site from their listings.
- Pay for
Click - Many of the search engines now provide a way to buy
your way to the top of the rankings. This means that you can bid
"x" amount of dollars that you are willing to pay per
click for a particular ranking. For example: Say to be ranked
#3 for the keyword "web design", it costs $.08/click.
If 100 visitors search for "web design" and click on
your link, then it just cost you $8.00 to generate 100 qualified
leads to your site. Several of the first to offer this service
were GoTo.com, RocketLinks.com and BrainFox.com.
